The Elements used to make Mobile Phones are now ‘Endangered’

Our world now has several endangered lists of animals, plants, insects and other living species. Now our resources are being depleted to from petroleum and natural gas to rare earth minerals. There are now endangered vital chemical elements have been included on an “endangered list” because they are being used extensively in mobile phones at an alarming high rate.

Scientist and experts now suggest that people should not replace their smartphones so often to allow the conservation of many rare elements used in their manufacture. Also, scientists have warned some of the substances used to make phones are becoming increasingly scarce due to limited supplies, their location in conflict zones and the lack of recycling.

To tackle this problem, they say people should avoid changing their phones every few years.
Researchers have developed a periodic table highlighting the scarcity of Earth’s 90 naturally occurring elements, many of which are used in the production of devices like phones and TVs.
The work was carried out as part of a project by the European Chemical Society (EuChemS), which represents more than 160,000 chemists from more than 40 member societies and other chemistry-related organisations.

The modernised periodic table was designed to mark the 150th anniversary of its creation in 1869.
It is estimated that about 10 million smartphones are discarded or replaced every month in the EU alone.

The new Periodic Table:

The 90 natural elements that make up everything (University of St Andrews )
Smartphones are made up of around 30 elements, including copper, gold and silver for wiring and lithium and cobalt in the battery.

The bright colours of the display are produced by small amounts of rare earth elements, including yttrium, terbium and dysprosium.

“It is astonishing that everything in the world is made from just 90 building blocks, the 90 naturally occurring chemical elements,” said Professor David Cole-Hamilton, a chemist at the University of St Andrews.

“There is a finite amount of each and we are using some so fast that they will be dissipated around the world in less than 100 years,” he said.

“Many of these elements are endangered, so should you really change your phone every two years?”
“It’s also deeply worrying to see how many elements are on the endangered list, including those which make up mobile phones.

“It is a lesson to us all to care for the world around us, as these naturally occurring elements won’t last forever unless we increase global recycling rates and governments introduce a genuine circular economy.”

Besides the problem of depleted reserves, many have raised concerns about the mines in which some elements used to make smartphones are extracted.

Extracting rare earth elements in China is known to have an enormous environmental impact, while cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have been highlighted as a major human rights concern.

Thus, since the elements used to make mobile phones are now ‘Endangered’ - People should now avoid changing their phones every year. Would you agree ?

  1. I can’t believe that making a phone can seriously damage the periodic table, in these modern age we people uses phones as our daily lives and after a year or so we change to a brand new phone not even thinking of the consequences, as phone manufacturers increase we lose a lot of materials that can be useful in other ways than making a phone.

  2. This article is short but a perfect example that we need to used our phone with care and do not change phone often. The elements that we found in our phone in 'endangered' and it's a big problem because the minerals or elements that we usually used are limited and cannot be multiplied just like animals or we humans.

All of the statement are connected and somehow this article is base of what title does really wanted to say.Modernization is indeed near and we are getting to much closer fr now from the past we have nothing now we have everything,The element makes in Mobile phones are now 'Endangered' very obvious one.As the climate change rises, animals descreases and the extinction of the living things are get more higher that the past it is obvious that our natural resources are depleting espeacially the element in making phone.

The demand of phone get higher in higher the fight between evolving thier pieces is getting more intense and more highly upragrade it is cause by the elements they dig up study to help build phone and even different stuff around us.

Minings are gettinguch higher demand with such a low contribute to the economy of a country yet is has a great damage towards our environment and nature. Some reason can be replace bit some are literally not so as a human who can afford and the major one who benefit it must avoid changing thier phones every year just because it is evolve.Phone are always thesame maybe it has that high profile security than the other phone but it always depend on us how we handle it.

There are only 90 element and smartphone already made up of 30 elements and already consuming almost 30% of the natural resources and with the chemist-related organization they tray to control it recreate it due to its limited supplies. It is really helpfull that chemistry existed in our daily life it maybe hard in the first look but when we look deeper and understand ,it contribute much more that the other field of academic by this we can be a good people and have a better future.

  4. People might need multiple phones especially for the ones who have a business or working in companies. Maybe those people have their reasons why they need to have that second phone like they want to relax for just a short time so they put away the work phone and use their personal phone also when at work, they put away the personal phone. With a work phone, other people who will borrow your phone won't go over close to personal material, you won't lose memories or text messages. But the natural elements used on making smart phones are getting endangered so we have to keep our phones and not change every two years. The Apple Company has a "Trade-in program" where you can trade in your old phone (any brand) to a new one or an Apple Store gift card, they recycle it so it is another way to help lessen the use of elements. Imagine doing that is like showing your love for mother earth and also helping to lessen the use of natural occuring elements that is used on making phones plus you also help yourself to save money which you can spend on the important things.

  5. When I read that article I realized that we should limit ourselves in buying new phones because the natural elements that they were using was already in the endagered list and by doing that kind of act it will lessen the use of the elements and we can help to prolong the life of the elements. And also we can suggest to the producers of our mobile phones that if we return our old phone to them and if some of the parts can be use again we can have discount if we will buy their products.(Mark Cyruss Llose)

People must stop changing their phones every year because it is costing our Earth. Our thirst and hunger for new and more advance technologies are slowly eating us to see negative effects of gadgets. Copper is among the three most-used metals in the world, essential for smartphones, desktop computers, industrial machinery, green energy initiatives and much more. Unfortunately, copper isn't being discovered fast enough to keep up with demand. We should stop changing phones every year.

I think with present world climate problems, we should be able to be more aware of what things are we doing that is leaving us empty handed. With non-renewable materials that make up the world, I think we should make up solutions or inventions that would not only make us content of our smart phones that we would need not to change it every few years but a smart phone that's going to with stand the test of time. The amazing benefits and side effects of creating new technology is at our hands, we either make our situation better with sustainable or more reliable products or we worsen our situation with more advance technology with no resources whatsoever to manufacture these.

The government should make a move now to the solution of this very alarming problem so that we can still use our smartphones in the future. The people should also be aware of this issue and limit their purchasing of smartphones every year.

  20. Mobile phones are wireless handheld devices that we can use to keep people connected, regardless of the distance that separates them and it enables us to do our tasks productively. Some mobile phone brands releases different upgraded cellphones every year that triggers individuals to buy some of them to relate with a newly upgraded cellphones. But could you imagine that buying newly upgraded mobile phones every year can make some of the elements that a mobile phone endangered? I've felt worried about mobile phones' elements because there is a finite amount of elements that we can use to develop an existing mobile phone and as we innovate it, the lesser mobile phones we can have. Come to think of it, on the present century the specific elements that has been stated in the article are now endangered, how will the next generation will experience and innovate their surroundings while some of natural elements are now mostly endangered? The solution that we can do is to use our old mobile phones even though there are lots of innovated and upgraded phones in the market. It is not important to have and buy some unimportant stuffs that are highly consumed in the market unless it has been destroyed or damaged. This article thought us to take care of our naturally occuring elements, it won't produce on its own unless the global recycling rates increases and government introduce a genuine circular economy. It is not yet over, we can increase and produce lots of elements if we continue to strive for the better of our surrounding and society.

As a student I agree in what the article have said that we should not change out phone every year even though you came from a rich family. We need to learn how to save the endangered resources that we have, we must learn to save the earth by doing this. I, myself only change my smartphone when it is already broken or it is outdated, I take several years to use a smartphone because first it is pricey second my smartphone is still working so why would I change it and the third one is that I am silently helping to save tha endangered elements that we have because I want the next generation will alos know this elements and see how beautiful our planet is.

what i learned in this article is that many chemicals in the periodic table is at risk of being endangered because some people change their phone yearly and a lot of chemical in the periodic table are going to used and a lot of chemical will be lose and i think it is the best to stick in to one and not to change yearly because it helps to preserved many chemicals and help the environment.

  25. As a millennial, I often change smartphones but as I read this article, it changed my mindset. Most of the materials used in making smartphones are found in the periodic table but because of the huge demand, some elements are already endangered. In the new periodic table, it shows how much elements are still available. We can notice that there are so many elements that already have a threat and by that, we should be more responsible on what we are consuming because if we lose those precious elements, it is hard for us to produce and discover new things. I also agreed on what Professor David Cole-Hamilton says. It is amazing to see that because of the 90 elemnents in the periodic table, we made a world like this but those elements are limited so we should take care of our environment.

Nature provided humans enormous amount of resources we needed to strive. However as the population continues to grow the demand of those resourse are uncontrollably increasing too. If these trend will continue, the future generation will suffer a great shortage of minerals. Everyone of us should make a change that can help to preserve those minerals, simply taking care of your smartphones and replacing it only when necessary will make a big contribution. Also manufacturers should find a eco-friendly substitutes for those endangered elements it will be a game-changer move. The government should make policies that will limit the extensive extraction of minerals and should strengthen their recycling programs to overall help our environment. Generally our natural resources are still enough for everyone of us and the future however any mismanagement and abuse of those can be harmful to the future, economy, environment and to our health and we should start preventing that form happening.

Among the chemical elements used in smartphones are copper, gold and silver for wiring, lithium and cobalt in the battery, and aluminium, silicon, oxygen and potassium in the glass screen. The number of electronics owned within businesses and consumers is on the rise. It’s apparent that the percentage of people recycling their devices at end-of-life is not good enough. In our lifetime, each person in the UK will produce around three tonnes of electronic waste. This is estimated to grow as smart, wireless and connected devices increase in production.

Researchers have also noted that some of the chemicals used to produce telephones are becoming increasingly scarce because of limited supplies, their place in conflict areas and shortage of conservation. They say that every few years people should avoid changing their devices. To care for the environment around us is a lesson for all of us, as these naturally occurring components will not last indefinitely unless we lift global recycling rates and governments adopt a true circular economy.

Mobile phones are known to be convenient and can easily be accessed. Almost all people nowadays use phones in their everyday lives. As amazing as it seems, smartphones are made up of chemical elements that we can see on periodic table, but like any other things, chemical elements are not unlimited, it can be exhausted too. So I agree that we shouldn't change phones in three years or up if not needed to at least help our environment.

There are now endangered vital chemical elements have been included on an “endangered list” because they are being used extensively in mobile phones at an alarming high rate. Extracting rare earth elements in China is known to have an enormous environmental impact, while cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have been highlighted as a major human rights concern. I agree with the decision of people should avoid changing their phones every year, not only because the elements are being endangered, but also, since phones are only used for exchanging messages, what's the point of getting the latest phone? The Periodic Table of the Chemical Elements, central to the field of chemistry, also carries a message of broad societal significance. It conveys a stark warning about the limits of the element stock of our planet and the dangers of excessive and inappropriate utilisation that are a threat to sustainable development. Many modern devices use a very wide range of elements and compounds derived from them, and many of these elements are rare or difficult to obtain. For example, relating to a single type of product, at least 70 elements, in simple or compound forms, can be found in the average smartphone. Changes in approach are needed that must involve better husbanding of the critical elements, focusing on conserving and recycling available supplies of the rare ones and finding new substitutes for specific applications, where possible. The changes must also involve finding ways to reduce the use of more abundant elements to a minimum, while much more consideration must be given to the entire cycle of use, repair, upgrading, repurposing, by‐products, waste and disposal, in order to prevent damage to the planetary environment. Recycling and re‐use of available element stocks must be an essential approach to consider but while human creativity and ingenuity will undoubtedly improve capacities to achieve this, it will not always be technically or economically feasible and, when it is, it will require major revision of many industrial processes and production models. Ensuring the sustainable development of the planet requires that we urgently learn how to be better stewards of the Earth's limited stock of the elemental building blocks inventoried in the Periodic Table. We need to improve our capacities to conserve them, using them with greater efficiency, with attention to conserving stocks and supplies and with increased awareness of the adverse consequences of how we exploit them. It’s amazing to think that everything that we see around us in the natural world is made up from just 90 building blocks, the 90 naturally occurring elements. Our smartphones are the most powerful and convenient way to communicate with people and has been a staple in our everyday lives since the time it was invented, for the use of smartphones has enable us to make our lives easier in such ways. The reason why we should be concerned about this is that smartphones are becoming more and more popular where in companies tend to create more phones that are much advanced than every previous smartphone created, So that us consumers will buy and replace our current phones with ones that are new and better, but because of this idea in mind that having new phones and creating new phones every now and then we are being unaware of how this affects our resources and how our smartphones contain earth materials that are very rare that may or may not exist in the near future due to the excessive use of it. Due to this problem scientist conclude that we should not replace our smartphones way too often to enable the conservation of these resources that we need in our smartphones, since our smartphones is one of the technologies that we use in our everyday lives and that a world imagined without them is impossible. As well as because of consumers replacing their smartphones too often, smartphones have not been recycled properly due to the vas amount of waste it produces, to prevent this from happening and for us to lessen the replacement of our smartphones we should at least try to take good care of them for as long as we can so that the conservation of the resources that are needed to be used in our smartphones would be possible.

As the advancement of our smartphones comes the people who desire to have one, replacing their not that old one with newly unboxed smartphones. The author shows the impact of humanity's selfish desire, by stating that the chemical elements are now depleting; continuous mining, merciless extraction of minerals are done just to give these humans a shining shimmering smartphones.

The article also stated that if humans do not stop their self from buying or replacing their smartphones too often, the minerals or chemical elements will dissipated around the globe in less than a hundred year. I know that these elements don't behave like animals, animals do extinct and disappear but these elements can't, but it will take time to replenish and be ready to mine again by acquisitive humans.

These chemical elements are already rare, their hard to find, and yet humans extract them like there is know tommorow, these merciless humans have no vision that what they are doing can impact our future, they future.

The article is very informative in way that it's trying to warn its reader, trying to give information to wake up and save our nature from these greedy monster, that all they care about is their profit and money. 109. Vital chemical elements have been included on an endangered list because they are being thrown away in mobile phones at such a high rate.
Scientists have warned some of the substances used to make phones are becoming increasingly scarce due to limited supplies, their location in conflict zones and the lack of recycling.

  111. Our world now has several endangered lists of animals, plants, insects and other living species. There are now endangered vital chemical elements have been included on an “endangered list” because they are being used extensively in mobile phones at an alarming high rate. Scientist and experts now suggest that people should not replace their smartphones so often to allow the conservation of many rare elements used in their manufacture.

  112. We should come up with the ideas of recycling our phones to prevent the extreme usage of the elements containing it. Therefore if we did that, we can minimize the things that has inside of our smartphones. We shouldn't change our smartphones every year so we can flow with the trend. If your phone is not dull or nearly dying, there's no reason to change or choose another phone.

  113. In this everything can extinct even the natural resources. Now even petrolum and natural gas are already in the list of endangered because it is used in making cellphone and other devices. We only had limited resources we should be used it in something important and the scientist suggested that the peoplw should not replace their electonics too often we must use recyling that everyone been lacking. In making a devices it use atleast 30 elements this is like gold, copper and etc. that we always use in our life. The main purpose if this study is to pursuade people to lessen the frequenly changing of phones.

  115. I think we don't need to change our phone every year just to be "In" in our society. our natural resources is non renewable so we need to conserve it that's why some people try to make a new thing that doesn't have a non renewable resources. we must not buy a new phone if your phone is still working at least in simple way you can help preserving our natural resources.

Use an alternative source for phones to stop the use of our natural source. And so that our natural source can't be endangered.

  119. Numerous years have passed since outstanding innovations were released in our world. It helped the people in every generation as it made their work easier and convenient. On the other hand, these technologies, mostly mobile phones are made from elements and resources that are non-renewable meaning it takes a long time to replace. Changing your mobile phone in just months or few years leads to the imbalance of resources to its demands. Imagine billions of people having mobile phones and millions of that replaces their phones frequently, resources are gradually decreasing because of this.

Lasting your mobile phone for a lot of years means conserving these “endangered” elements and resources which can let the next generations experience these wonderful innovations. -Althea Manimtim

  122. I've learned that the modernised periodic table was designed to mark the 150th anniversary of its creation in 1869. And the bright colours of the display are produced by small amounts of rare earth elements, including yttrium, terbium and dysprosium. Besides the problem of depleted reserves, many have raised concerns about the mines in which some elements used to make smartphones are extracted.

  123. Now our resources are being depleted to from petroleum and natural gas to rare earth minerals. There are now endangered vital chemical elements that have been included on an "endangered list" because they are being used extensively in mobile phones at an alarming high rate. Scientists and experts now suggest that people should not replace their smartphones so often to allow the conservation of many rare elements used in their manufacture. Researchers have developed a periodic table highlighting the scarcity of Earth’s 90 naturally occurring elements, many of which are used in the production of devices like phones and TVs. It's better if we don't usually change our phones so that we can still save our resources that are being endangered.

  124. People should think if they are planning to upgrade their phone is how to recycle the old one , because people who have upgraded their phone they put it in the drawers for safe keeping. If they give it to recycling programs like apple recycling program they offer to take your old iphone then they extract the different parts that is still usable to make a different phone thus cutting the price of manufacturing cost and helping the environment at the same time.

  126. According to the article people used to upgrade or buy a new phone and recycle their old phone. They stocked it in a safe place. Many people especially the high class used this everytime. Buying iphones to be exact. They upgrade the apple recycling program and see whats the usable and non usable parts for them to know the difference. And for them to manufacture the cost and helping our environment. And since elemments used to make mobile phones are now harmful and endangered. We must aavoid buying a new phone every year

  129. I'm very surpised to realize that synthetic components in our cellphones can influence our body in a negative manner. All through the years, cell phones contain unsafe poisons including lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, chlorine and bromine, which can spill into the groundwater and bioaccumulate in the natural way of life making adverse harm the dirt, water supply, vegetation, creatures and people. It's exceptionally odd for me to discover that data since we people can really profit by it without imagining that it is a perilous materials. It's not additionally acceptable that we change our phones each couple of years since it can prompt destructive impacts like what I have said.

  130. I realy wondered to know that many elements are included on an endangered list because they are being used extensively in mobile phones at an alarming high rate. To tackle this problem, scientist and experts said that people should avoid changing their phones every few years. They say that smartphones are made up of around 30 elements including copper, gold and silver for wiring, lithium and cobalt for battery. Many of these elements are endangered, so as a student I'm also deeply worrying to see how many elements are on the endangered list inculding those which make up mobile phones. It is also lesson to us to care for the world around us, as these naturally occuring elements won't last forever unless we increase global recycling rates and governments introduce a genuine circular economy.

It estimated that about 10 million smartphones are discarded or replaced every month. Smartphones are made up of around 30 elements, including copper, gold, and silver for wiring and lithium and Cobalt in the battery. We didn't know that The elements used to make our mobile phone are now endangered because they are being use extensively in mobile phones at an alarming high rate. When our mobile phone had a problem, like the screen got crack, the camera wasn't that good and it's old. We tend to buy another one that viral and got our taste. I agree that we shouldn't buy another one or change our mobile phones because some of substances used to make phones are becoming increasingly scare due to limited supplies, their location in conflict zones and the lack of recycling.

In my perspective, different parts of phones is needed to be upgraded for the efficiency of phones. Which it'll use more productive task finishing it earlier. Like the battery, there are so many element potentials to look for to unlock the fullest use. Their are some parts of technologies that like phones can be reuse or recycle which really capable to make another phone from different models.
